Lusaka, Zambia24 — 5th October 2026 — The Non-governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has congratulated Nelly Butete Kashumba Mutti on her re-election as Speaker of the National Assembly, while urging her to use her second term to strengthen impartiality, parliamentary democracy and public confidence.
NGOCC Board Chairperson Beauty Katebe said Mutti’s re-election was significant for the women’s movement as she remains the first woman to occupy the Speaker’s position in Zambia’s history.
Katebe said Mutti’s return to the Speaker’s chair demonstrated that women could rise to the highest levels of leadership and decision-making in the country.
She, however, said women in leadership were often subjected to intense scrutiny, with the performance of individual women sometimes being used to judge the capabilities of women as a whole.
Katebe said this placed an added responsibility on Mutti to lead the National Assembly with excellence, fairness and integrity.
She urged Mutti to reflect on concerns raised by Members of Parliament during her previous term and use the experience gained to improve how she presides over the House.
NGOCC said it was confident that Mutti could address the concerns and ensure that Parliament remained a place where all members were treated fairly and parliamentary democracy was strengthened.
The organisation also said it looked forward to continued engagement with the National Assembly, particularly in advancing gender-responsive legislation.
NGOCC wished Mutti success as she begins her second term as Speaker.
