Lusaka, Zambia24 — 18-10-2026 — GOVERNMENT has called for carbon projects to deliver tangible benefits to local communities by improving livelihoods and protecting natural resources from exploitation.
Director of Green Economy and Climate Change Ephraim Shitima said the Emissions Reduction Program (ERP), being implemented under the Transforming Landscapes for Resilience and Development (TRALARD II) project in Muchinga Province, would support land restoration and improve community livelihoods.
Mr Shitima was speaking at the close of the TRALARD II Project Implementation Support Mission in Muchinga Province.
World Bank TRALARD II Task Team Leader Ambroise Brenier said the ERP was designed to link natural resource management with benefits for local communities.
Mr Brenier pledged the World Bank Group’s continued support for the programme.
TRALARD II National Coordinator John Banda said the field mission had helped stakeholders understand the needs and circumstances of different communities as the ERP moved from early-stage design towards investment.
Mr Banda said the project would work with existing carbon project developers in Muchinga because they served the same communities.
TRALARD II Provincial Project Operations Officer Catherine Sakala said the mission had provided an opportunity to assess how carbon projects were benefiting communities through groups such as the Kakoko Community Forest Management Group (CFMG).
Ms Sakala said Kakoko was already benefiting from an existing carbon project in the province.
She said the group’s experience could serve as a case study for guiding the implementation of the ERP in Muchinga.
The implementation support mission was aimed at assessing progress towards TRALARD II’s development objectives and reviewing project activities on the ground.
