Lifwekelo urges ECZ and ZICTA to intervene, says late former president should not be used in election campaign

Lusaka,  Zambia24, 28 July 26 – The opposition Patriotic Front (PF) has urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) to halt the circulation of campaign videos featuring late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, indicating that the practice is not only immoral but also against religious values.

PF Secretary for Administration Edwin Lifwekelo told journalists that the use of the late former president’s videos in political campaigns violated principles of morality and respect for the dead. He described the development as unfortunate and a sign of desperation by those seeking to benefit politically from Mr Lungu’s legacy.

Lifwekelo alleged that the videos were being circulated by supporters of presidential candidates Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu, saying the late former president, who is not a candidate in the August 13 general election, should not be used as a campaign tool.

He said political leaders should develop their own messages and programmes instead of relying on the popularity of deceased leaders.

“We demand that those videos of Edgar Chagwa Lungu be withdrawn from circulation with immediate effect. Edgar Chagwa Lungu must be allowed to rest,” Lifwekelo said.

He urged ECZ and ZICTA to pay attention to the matter and take action against anyone found using the late president’s images and videos for campaign purposes.

Lifwekelo also questioned the continued delay in burying the former president, calling on the Church and the Lungu family to state their positions regarding the use of his image in political activities.

He further accused Mundubile and Makebi of lacking their own political blueprint and attempting to rely on Mr Lungu’s legacy to gain electoral support.

However, Lifwekelo said President Hakainde Hichilema was winning public support because of what he described as a clear message and record to defend.

He maintained that former presidents Michael Sata and Edgar Lungu were unique political figures whose legacies could not be replicated, urging politicians to build their own identities rather than depend on the memories of past leaders.
