Kafue, Zambia24 — 12-07-2026 -- President Hakainde Hichilema has unveiled a major development package for Kafue District, pledging to expand Kafue District Hospital, provide modern medical equipment, construct a dual carriageway linking Kafue and Lusaka, and rehabilitate local roads as he campaigns for another term of office.
Addressing hundreds of residents and party supporters during a campaign rally in Kafue on Sunday, President Hichilema said his administration had listened to concerns from residents and identified healthcare and road infrastructure as some of the district’s most urgent needs.
He said the planned expansion of Kafue District Hospital would help address pressure on the facility, which has experienced increasing demand due to the district’s growing population.
President Hichilema said the government would increase the hospital’s capacity and equip it with modern medical equipment to improve access to healthcare services and reduce the number of patients seeking treatment outside the district.
“Strengthening healthcare delivery remains a priority,” President Hichilema said, adding that his administration had continued investing in health facilities and increasing the number of health workers across the country.
He said the Kafue hospital project was part of broader efforts to ensure citizens receive quality healthcare closer to where they live.
On road infrastructure, President Hichilema announced plans to construct a dual carriageway between Kafue and Lusaka, saying the project would address congestion and improve movement along one of the country’s busiest routes.
The President said motorists and commuters had endured years of traffic challenges on the route, which connects Kafue to the capital city and serves as a major corridor for business and transportation.
He said the dual carriageway would make travel easier, improve road safety and support economic activity between Kafue and Lusaka.
President Hichilema further pledged to rehabilitate township roads and feeder roads in Kafue, saying poor road networks had affected residents’ ability to access markets, health facilities and other essential services.
He said improved feeder roads would also benefit farmers by making it easier to transport agricultural produce to markets.
The President also welcomed the creation of Kafue North and Kafue East constituencies following the delimitation exercise, saying the move would improve representation and bring leaders closer to the people.
He said the creation of the new constituencies would allow elected representatives to focus on specific community challenges and improve the delivery of development programmes.
President Hichilema urged Kafue residents to support the UPND in the August 13 general election, arguing that his government needed more time to complete projects already started and implement additional development programmes.
He said the UPND administration had focused on addressing challenges affecting ordinary citizens through investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure and the economy.
