Lusaka, Zambia24 — 7-7-2026 - Justice for Zambian Citizens Against Predatory Lenders (JZAP) National Leader and Coordinator Daimone Siulapwa has described the death of Kabwe teacher Ms. Lucy Konkola as a wake-up call on the need for urgent financial education and stronger support systems for citizens facing debt challenges.

Siulapwa expressed condolences to Ms. Konkola’s family, colleagues, learners and the education fraternity, saying the tragedy highlights the serious impact financial distress can have on individuals who feel overwhelmed and without adequate support.

Siulapwa said there was a need for a nationwide financial literacy campaign to help Zambians understand responsible borrowing, debt management, budgeting and the dangers of predatory lending practices.

Siulapwa has since urged the Government, through the Bank of Zambia, to lead a sustained financial education programme targeting civil servants, teachers, youths, farmers, pensioners and the general public.

Siulapwa said financial literacy should be treated as a national priority, with citizens being equipped with knowledge on loan agreements, interest rates, saving, debt restructuring options and where to seek assistance when facing financial difficulties.

Siulapwa further called for collaboration between the Bank of Zambia, financial institutions, employers, civil society organisations, churches and consumer protection agencies to ensure financial education and support services reach communities across the country.

Siulapwa said citizens experiencing financial pressure should be encouraged to seek help from trusted family members, counsellors, religious leaders or relevant institutions, stressing that access to support can help prevent further tragedies.

Siulapwa reaffirmed JZAP’s commitment to advocating for stronger consumer protection, responsible lending practices and increased financial awareness, saying proactive measures were necessary to protect citizens from the effects of overwhelming debt.
