Hands Off ECZ
CPRA backs campaign regulation, says scheduling is key to peaceful 2026 elections

Lusak, Zambia24 -- (21-06-2026) -- The Centre for Peace Research and Advocacy (CPRA) has defended the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s (ECZ) regulation and scheduling of presidential campaign activities ahead of the August 2026 General Elections, saying the commission is acting within its legal mandate.
CPRA Executive Director Cliffton Mayaba Chfuwe told Zambia24 that allegations by some political leaders that the ECZ is undermining democracy are misplaced, as the commission is legally mandated to manage elections and ensure campaigns are conducted in a peaceful, orderly and fair manner.
Mr Chfuwe said the ECZ has the authority to schedule and regulate campaign activities whenever necessary in order to maintain public order, prevent conflict and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
He commended the commission for introducing a structured campaign timetable for presidential candidates, saying it is an important step aimed at reducing the risk of clashes between supporters of rival political parties.
Mr Chfuwe said the decision was timely, given recent incidents of political violence in Chawama, Kabwe and Mazabuka, warning that poorly coordinated campaigns can heighten tensions during elections.
He noted that electoral bodies in many democratic countries apply similar measures to prevent violence and ensure peaceful campaigns, adding that Zambia should not be an exception.
Mr Chfuwe urged political parties, candidates and stakeholders to appreciate the role of the ECZ in promoting peaceful elections and preventing violence, saying administrative decisions by the commission should not be viewed through a partisan lens.
He further called on political actors to respect the ECZ as a neutral and impartial referee of the electoral process, stressing that compliance with electoral regulations is a legal requirement for all participants.
Mr Chfuwe also urged political leaders to support the commission’s efforts to deliver peaceful, credible and violence-free elections, and to encourage supporters to resolve disputes through lawful channels.
He said Zambia needs responsible leadership, restraint and a collective commitment to peace as the country approaches the August 2026 General Elections.
