Call to Fast-Track Tobacco Bill
TOFAZA urges MPs to act swiftly, citing global momentum for stronger tobacco control
Lusaka, Zambia24 — (April 28, 2026) — The Tobacco Free Association of Zambia (TOFAZA), has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to fast-track the Tobacco Control Bill No. 40 of 2025, urging them to act decisively in strengthening the country’s public health response.
TOFAZA Executive Director Brenda Chitindi said Zambia must move quickly to adopt stronger tobacco control measures, describing the bill as critical to protecting public health.
She cited the as an example, noting its Tobacco and Vapes Bill introduces a “tobacco-free generation” policy that will bar the sale of tobacco to individuals born after January 1, 2008, from 2027.
Chitindi said such measures shift focus toward prevention and help protect young people from nicotine addiction.
She urged lawmakers to prioritise the bill, stating it would help reduce tobacco-related diseases and ease pressure on the healthcare system.
Chitindi added that similar efforts are underway in countries such as Maldives, South Africa and France, and warned against resistance from the tobacco industry.
“The right to health must prevail over corporate interests,” she said.
She said passing the bill would mark a significant step toward safeguarding future generations and strengthening Zambia’s public health framework.
