KGRTC–Vision High Tech Partnership

Renewable energy projects align with government energy diversification goals

Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre (KGRTC) and China-based Vision High Tech have signed a partnership agreement to expand renewable energy generation and strengthen skills development, a move that aligns with Zambia’s national goals to diversify its energy mix and promote sustainable power solutions.

The partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will see the rollout of phased solar power projects, starting with a 10-megawatt plant already underway, followed by a second 10-megawatt phase.

Together, these projects will provide 20 megawatts of clean energy this year, with potential expansion to 50 megawatts in the future.

KGRTC Head of Projects and Consultancy, Mwaba Matimba, said the agreement strengthens the operational collaboration with Vision High Tech and positions the Centre to contribute directly to Zambia’s energy generation while supporting its self-sustainability strategy.

The first phase is expected to be commissioned around June or July, with media coverage planned.

Vision High Tech Lin Yifeng General Manager highlighted that the partnership will introduce intelligent solar and wind energy technologies, allowing for remote control and real-time monitoring.

“This collaboration combines technology transfer with capacity building in modern renewable energy systems,” he said.

KGRTC Board Chairperson Patricia Musiya said the partnership supports the Centre’s strategic objectives, including strengthening partnerships and promoting self-sustainability.

Revenue generated from the projects will be reinvested into expanding training programmes and facilities.

Chief Executive Officer Davies Chinkusu emphasised that KGRTC is transitioning from purely theoretical training to practical implementation, demonstrating that renewable energy projects can be successfully executed locally.

He added that the acquisition of the former ZESCO Training Centre in Ndola, now KGRTC North, will expand capacity for local and international trainees, particularly from the Copperbelt and neighbouring regions.

Chinkusu also stressed that skills development is critical for safe and efficient energy infrastructure.

“Without trained personnel, even the best infrastructure becomes a risk. Safety, health, and competence are essential in the power sector,” he said.

The MoU comes as Zambia intensifies efforts to adopt alternative energy solutions, with KGRTC–Vision High Tech positioned as a key contributor to energy security, practical skills development, and institutional sustainability.
