Lusaka, Zambia 31 – Socialist Party President Dr. Fred M’membe has been named the People’s Pact presidential candidate for the August 2026 general elections.
Dr. Cosmas Musumali, Secretary General of the People’s Pact, told journalists at a media briefing that a new coalition of opposition parties and civil society organisations had launched a unified platform aimed at forming a Government of National Unity.
He said the unveiling of Dr. M’membe marks the formal launch of the People’s Pact, a broad-based citizens’ movement seeking to unite political and civic forces.
"The movement aims to offer Zambians alternative leadership focused on national unity, democratic renewal, and economic justice."
Dr. Musumali explained that the People’s Pact emerged from initiatives by civil society groups, faith-based institutions, and concerned citizens calling for credible leadership that prioritises people over partisan interests.
The movement is registered with the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA) and is concentrating on mass voter mobilisation ahead of the 2026 elections, using the Socialist Party as its electoral vehicle.
He described the People’s Pact as transcending traditional party politics, uniting opposition parties, civil society actors, and citizens committed to restoring democratic governance, economic dignity, and social justice.
Dr. Musumali announced the leadership team: Dr. Fred M’membe as presidential candidate and flag bearer, with Kaluba Musenda Simuyemba (Movement for Change and Equality), Peter Chazya Sinkamba (Green Party President and People’s Pact Chairperson), and Robert Kaponda Sichinga (statesman and economic strategist) serving as vice presidents.
The Secretariat, led by Dr. Musumali as Secretary General and Professor Naison Ngoma as Deputy Secretary General, will coordinate mobilisation, stakeholder engagement, and election preparations.
The People’s Pact is based on principles of national unity, a five-year transitional agenda, people-centred governance, political freedoms, and economic transformation that prioritises citizens.
Dr. Musumali said the transitional programme will focus on economic recovery, job creation, poverty reduction, and restoring democratic institutions while safeguarding freedom of expression, rule of law, and accountability.
He invited all Zambians, regardless of political affiliation, to join the People’s Pact, saying the country’s challenges require collective action and shared sacrifice.
The Secretariat will immediately launch nationwide mobilisation campaigns, engage civil society, faith-based organisations, trade unions, and community groups, publish the five-year transitional agenda, establish provincial and district structures, and work with election observers to promote free, fair, and transparent elections ahead of 2026.
