Lusaka, Zambia24 – (30 October 2025) – The Government of Zambia has officially gazetted funeral grants to support families of workers who die as a result of workplace accidents or occupational diseases.
According to Mwaka Ndawa, Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the Workers’ Compensation (Funeral Expenses Reimbursement) Order, 2025, under Statutory Instrument No. 69 of 2025, sets a reimbursement of 25,000 unit fees for dependents or persons who cover funeral expenses.
The legislation was enacted under Section 71(5) of the Workers’ Compensation Act No. 10 of 1999.
Minister of Labour and Social Security Brenda Mwika Tambatamba, MP, said the measure reflects the Government’s commitment to modernizing Zambia’s social security system and ensuring no family bears the burden of workplace tragedy alone.
“This Statutory Instrument guarantees that bereaved families of workers who die in the line of duty receive timely financial support for funeral expenses,” Ms. Tambatamba said.
The Minister highlighted that the reform expands social protection to previously excluded groups, including informal sector workers, domestic workers, bus and taxi drivers, and marketeers, signaling a shift toward inclusive social security coverage.
“This is a progressive and humane approach by the New Dawn Government—one that listens to the real needs of workers rather than treating them as passive contributors,” Ms. Tambatamba added.
The funeral grants will be administered through the Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB), which will oversee timely disbursement and ensure families affected by workplace deaths receive immediate support.
