Lusaka, Zambia24 - (22-09-2025) - The opposition Zambia We Want (ZWW) party is preparing for a rerun of its presidential election after front-runner Kapembwa Simbao failed to secure the required 50 percent plus one threshold during the party’s National Convention.
In the closely contested race, Simbao received 15 votes, followed by Dr. Ernest Mwansa with 10. Former Defense Minister Richwell Siamunene scored 5, while economists Bob Sichinga and Auxiliar Buoe Ponga each received 3 votes.
Speaking after the election, Muhabe Lungu, ZWW Party Secretary-General, described the process as transparent and orderly.
“The election was free and fair, and the delegates exercised their democratic right without interference,” Lungu said.
“The constitution is clear — the winner must obtain 50 percent plus one of the votes. Since this was not achieved, a rerun is necessary.”

He urged party members to remain united. “Contests of this nature are healthy for democracy. What matters now is for the membership to rally behind the winner in the rerun so the party can focus on national issues,” Lungu added.
Despite the unresolved presidential race, ZWW successfully elected key leaders to its executive committee.
The newly elected officials are expected to stabilize party structures, mobilize grassroots support, and ensure transparency ahead of the rerun.
Elected leaders include Fostine Sinyangwe as Chairperson for Women, Patricia Kapijimpanga for Labour, Anthony Mwange for Energy, and Josia Kinuna for Disabilities.

Mumamba Mwansa was elected for Infrastructure, Salale Isaac for Community Development, and Chairles M. Mutambala for Information and Publicity.
Obrain Mwashinkila will oversee Water Development, while George Chulumanda leads on Foreign Affairs.
Other elected positions include Lloyd Kaziya as Chairperson for Defense and Security, Real Mufwaya as National Youths Chairperson, and Cornhill Mwana for Green Economy.
Bob Sichinga will handle Economic Affairs, Nixon Banda Agriculture, and Major Francis Kamanga Elections.

Malumo Mukwamba was elected for Science and Technology, Mary Thole for Finance, and Sakala Ospray for Commerce and Industry. Kaluba Anord was elected Deputy Treasurer General.
Several positions remain unresolved, including Chairperson for Legal, National Chairperson, Chairperson for Lands, Trustee, and Chairperson for Local Government, as candidates either failed to meet the threshold or withdrew.
Lungu assured members that the party will communicate the roadmap for the presidential rerun soon.
“We will provide clear guidance on dates and procedures so the process is completed without delay,” he said.
Party insiders described the convention as one of the most competitive internal races since ZWW’s formation, reflecting increased engagement from members.
The outcome underscores the party’s commitment to internal democracy while highlighting the need for unity ahead of the rerun.
