Chinese Firm Eyes Long-Term Eco-Friendly Energy Investments in Zambia

By Francis Maingaila

Lusaka, Zambia24  - (31-07-2025) – Chinese energy company Sunvolt Battery has expressed interest in deepening its long-term investment in Zambia’s green energy sector, with a strong focus on environmentally friendly technologies and sustainable business practices.

Speaking during an exhibition in Lusaka, Terry Wang, Sales and Marketing Manager of Sunvolt Battery, said the company is committed to supporting Zambia’s transition to clean energy while creating local economic opportunities.

“We are committed to doing long-term business in Zambia in a way that benefits the people. Climate change is closely linked to energy consumption, so we are focusing our efforts on the energy sector,” Wang said.

Wang explained that one of the company’s core areas is the recycling of lead-acid batteries commonly used in vehicles. He said their high recycling rate makes their operations environmentally friendly, reducing harmful waste and promoting a circular economy.

“We recycle used batteries at a very high rate, which helps protect nature and reduce environmental impact,” he said.

In addition to battery recycling, Sunvolt Battery is also investing in new energy systems, including solar technologies, which Wang believes will play a critical role in Zambia’s energy future.

“New energy—especially solar—is not only clean but also friendly to the economy. It will grow rapidly and benefit the country in the long run,” Wang added.

As part of the broader industrial push, Sunvolt Battery is preparing to establish Zambia’s first local battery manufacturing plant, marking a major milestone in the country’s energy and industrial sectors.

The project is aimed at reducing Zambia’s dependence on imported batteries while promoting industrial self-reliance.

Zambia currently imports all its batteries, leaving consumers exposed to high prices and the volatility of foreign supply chains. Sunvolt Battery seeks to address this gap by producing high-quality, affordable batteries locally and positioning itself as a major industrial player in Zambia.

“We are committed to ending battery import dependence by producing locally made batteries that meet global standards,” said a company spokesperson.

The new plant will be equipped with advanced technology and machinery imported from China and will utilize high-purity lead and enhanced acid formulations to produce durable, long-lasting batteries.

Its flagship product line, SUNVOLT, will cater to automotive, solar, and backup energy markets.

In addition to improving energy access and affordability, the plant is expected to create jobs, stimulate local industries, and support Zambia’s broader industrialization and climate resilience goals.

Wang concluded by reaffirming the company’s willingness to maintain communication with local stakeholders and expressed hope for future collaboration.
