Lusaka, Zambia24 – (24 June 2025) - The National Union of Public and Private Educators of Zambia (NUPPEZ) has joined the teaching fraternity in mourning the passing of Mr. Evans Machayi, former General Secretary of the Secondary School Teachers Union of Zambia (SESTUZ), describing his death as a significant loss to the education sector.

In a statement issued Tuesday, NUPPEZ General Secretary Dr. Charity Kampamba said Mr. Machayi was a passionate and selfless leader who tirelessly championed the rights and welfare of teachers.

“Mr. Machayi was more than a unionist — he was a voice of reason and a symbol of commitment to the teaching profession,” Dr. Kampamba said.

“His dedication to improving conditions for teachers remains an enduring legacy.”

She noted that his leadership was marked by resilience and service, particularly in advancing labor rights and promoting fair policies for educators across the country.

On behalf of NUPPEZ, Dr. Kampamba extended condolences to Mr. Machayi’s family, SESTUZ leadership, and all educators impacted by his work.

“We stand with SESTUZ and the entire teaching community in this moment of grief. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” she said.

Mr. Machayi, who was based in Kabwe, earned national respect for his principled leadership and unwavering dedication to teachers. Plans for his memorial service are expected to be announced by SESTUZ.
