Battle for Lumezi: UPND Picks Its Warrior

By Francis Maingaila

Lusaka, Zambia24- (26-05-2025) - The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has adopted Lufeyo Ngoma as its candidate for the upcoming Lumezi parliamentary by-election, following the conviction and removal of former MP Munir Zulu.

The move signals UPND’s growing confidence in Eastern Province, traditionally an opposition stronghold. The party views this election as more than a constituency contest—it's a test of shifting political dynamics in a key region.

UPND Demonstrates Growing Influence

At a media briefing in Lusaka, UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda said 14 members initially applied to contest the seat, a reflection of the party's expanding presence in Eastern Province.

“The enthusiasm we saw proves UPND is now a central player in the region,” Imenda said.

He described a rigorous vetting process that narrowed the field to seven candidates through constituency, district, provincial, and national evaluations.

Shortlisted contenders included Anderson Banda, Col. Mtonga, Ezekiel Lukenda, Malani Zimba, Isaac Zulu, among others.

“This transparent process reflects our commitment to internal democracy,” Imenda added.

Garry Nkombo: Lumezi Deserves Better Leadership

UPND Elections Chairperson Garry Nkombo framed the by-election as a chance to bring serious leadership to Lumezi, contrasting Ngoma’s credentials with what he termed the “grandstanding” of the previous MP.

“Our candidate understands governance and the development agenda. We have absolute faith in his ability to deliver,” Nkombo said.

He urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia and the police to ensure a peaceful campaign, warning against intimidation or violence.

Ngoma’s Pledge: Restore Development and Integrity

In his acceptance speech, Ngoma said his focus would be on restoring integrity and bringing tangible development to Lumezi.

“The people of Lumezi have been spectators in their own development. That ends now,” he said.

He promised to prioritize education, agriculture, and infrastructure—areas he said had been neglected.

Losing Aspirants Rally Behind Ngoma

All six losing aspirants pledged to support Ngoma, reinforcing party unity.

Anderson Banda said, “The party’s decision is final. This election is about securing a better future for Lumezi.”

Malani Zimba echoed this, adding, “This is not the time to sulk. The President needs a strong MP here.”

Col. Mtonga declared, “Even if we’re not on the ballot, we’re still in the trenches.”

Eastern Province: The Next Political Frontier

The Lumezi by-election has become symbolic in Eastern Province, a region showing signs of shifting political loyalty. UPND strategists view this election as an opportunity to strengthen the party’s reach and affirm its development-focused agenda.

President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration has invested in rural electrification, agriculture, education, and infrastructure—key issues likely to influence Lumezi voters.

Conclusion: UPND Targets Victory, Opposition on Alert

With a united front and a well-regarded candidate, UPND enters the Lumezi by-election with momentum. A victory would not only increase its parliamentary numbers but also underscore a political realignment in Eastern Province—once seen as opposition territory.
