Lusaka, Zambia – Zambeef Products PLC has partnered with the End Malaria Council (EMC) to support Zambia’s malaria elimination program, pledging financial, logistical, and awareness-driven initiatives to reduce the disease’s impact on public health and the economy.

Speaking at the partnership announcement, Zambeef Chief Executive Officer Faith Mukutu emphasized the company’s broader commitment beyond food production.

"A healthy workforce is essential for productivity and sustainability, and malaria remains a major public health challenge affecting millions of Zambians," Mukutu stated.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Zambeef will integrate malaria awareness campaigns, prevention programs, and resource mobilization efforts within its key operational areas, including Mpongwe, Chisamba, Mongu, and Namwala.

The Ministry of Health aims to reduce malaria cases by 90% by 2030, with EMC coordinating multisectoral engagement to accelerate progress.

An EMC representative emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships, noting that Zambeef’s involvement highlights the private sector’s role in public health initiatives.

Zambeef will contribute by expanding awareness through its network of nearly 8,000 employees, mobilizing resources for malaria interventions, promoting innovation with EMC to enhance response strategies, and training workplace leaders as malaria prevention advocates.

Mukutu stressed that malaria elimination requires collective action, urging businesses, communities, and civil society to collaborate.

EMC Chairperson Peter Cottan highlighted malaria’s severe impact, noting that it kills four Zambians daily, with pregnant women and children under five most affected.

Zambia records over 8.6 million cases annually, affecting nearly half the population and reducing economic productivity by an estimated 1.3% of GDP due to absenteeism and decreased efficiency.

The MoU will also see Zambeef integrate malaria prevention into workplace policies, ensuring employees and surrounding communities have access to prevention measures.

Zambeef joins other private sector partners in the malaria fight, including Zambia Sugar, First Quantum Minerals, and the Bankers Association of Zambia (BAZ), all of whom have successfully reduced malaria cases in their operational areas.

Cottan acknowledged progress in malaria control, noting that malaria-related deaths have dropped from five in 2023 to three in early 2024. However, he stressed that even one death is too many for a preventable and curable disease.

"We will continue engaging the private sector to expand malaria elimination efforts. Malaria ends with me, malaria ends with you, and malaria ends with Zambeef," he concluded.
