ZCSA Destroys K47,000 Worth of Non-Compliant Products

... Faulty Electrical Goods Identified as Major Safety Hazards for Consumers

By Francis Maingaila

Lusaka, January 29, 2025 – The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has today destroyed non-compliant electrical products valued at K47,408.50 in Lusaka.

The items, comprising electrical plugs and extension cables, were seized between November 11-14, 2024, from various outlets, including Fidelity Store, Naeela Investment, Penz Zhang Investment, Tanzim, Golden Oaklet, and Bhadi Investment, for contravening the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017.

ZCSA Public Relations Officer Onishias Maamba revealed that there were significant deviations from required safety standards, posing serious risks to consumers. Key issues included non-compliant materials, improper dimensions, missing fuses, and incorrect wiring practices.

“The use of steel or alloys of steel instead of brass for plug pins and current-carrying parts is particularly concerning, as it compromises safety, performance, and durability,” Mr. Maamba said.

“Our assessment identified safety hazards, including poor insulation, improper earthing, and inadequate fuse protection, which can lead to electrical surges, short circuits, and even fires.”

The non-compliant products had the potential to cause personal injury, electric shock, and property damage through fire.

“ZCSA is committed to ensuring only safe products are allowed on the market,” Mr. Maamba stated.

“The destruction of these products demonstrates our resolve to enforce compulsory standards and protect consumers.”

ZCSA has warned of stern action against entities supplying non-compliant products.

“Entities who illegally supply non-compliant products will face the full force of the law,” Mr. Maamba warned.

"We urge consumers to report suspicious products to the nearest ZCSA office."

The agency regulates electrical products under compulsory standards, including ZS 106 (Safety of Household Electrical Appliances), ZS 558 (Plugs, Socket Outlets, Adaptors, and Connection Units), and ZS 688 (Electric Cables for Fixed Installations).

The destruction of these products is part of ZCSA’s ongoing efforts to enforce standards and protect the health and safety of Zambian consumers.
