Government Assures Steady Fuel Supply Amid Challenges
Lusaka, Zambia – (31-12-2024) - The Ministry of Energy has assured the nation of a stable fuel supply as 2024 draws to a close.
Despite global and regional challenges, including instability in some oil-producing countries, the government, through the Ministry of Energy, has worked tirelessly with stakeholders to maintain a consistent and uninterrupted supply of petroleum products.
In a statement issued by Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Peter Mumba, the Ministry highlighted the steady availability of fuel for both industrial and domestic use throughout the year.
Mumba commended all players in the sector for ensuring the stability of supply under difficult circumstances.
Current petroleum stocks stand at 38.5 million litres of diesel, 10 million litres of petrol, 130,000 litres of kerosene, and 1.5 million litres of Jet A-1 fuel.
These reserves are expected to last 9, 6, 13, and 9 days respectively, with additional shipments on the way to bolster these figures further.
The Ministry emphasized that all border processes for fuel tankers have been expedited to prevent delays in supply and reassured citizens that there is no need for panic buying or hoarding, as the current stock is sufficient to meet national demand.
To ensure smooth operations in the petroleum industry, the Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to providing policy guidance and maintaining oversight through the Energy Regulation Board (ERB).
Monitoring will continue to ensure the quality and safety of all products, and sub-standard petroleum products will not be permitted on the market.
Acknowledging sporadic shortages at some fuel stations, the Ministry attributed these to logistical delays by individual operators.
Of the 617 fuel stations across the country, 508 currently have both diesel and petrol, 89 have only diesel, 7 have only petrol, and 13 are temporarily out of stock.
The Ministry expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders for their cooperation throughout the year and extended best wishes to Zambians for a productive 2025.
“The Ministry of Energy remains committed to ensuring a fair, transparent, and well-regulated petroleum sector,” Mumba said in conclusion.
