Lusaka, Zambia (17-12-2024) - A consortium of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has called on the government to urgently address pressing governance, economic, and social challenges that are undermining the country's stability.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) Executive Director Maurice Nyambe highlighted concerns over worsening corruption, economic hardships, and social inequalities.
“The country’s governance landscape is deteriorating, and this requires immediate intervention to restore trust and stability,” said Nyambe.
The CSOs emphasized that corruption continues to impede progress, warning that Zambia risks losing both local and international confidence.
They also urged the government to strengthen oversight institutions and improve transparency in public resource management.
Nyambe further underscored the need to address economic challenges affecting ordinary citizens, including high unemployment and rising inflation.
“Many Zambians are grappling with economic hardships. The government must prioritize measures that promote economic equity and provide relief to vulnerable groups,” he said.
On social issues, the CSOs expressed concern over growing inequalities in access to basic services such as health and education. They called for deliberate investments in social protection programs to ensure inclusivity and equitable development.
The consortium reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the government to address these challenges but cautioned that inaction could exacerbate social unrest and erode democratic principles.
The CSOs concluded their statement by appealing for a national dialogue aimed at finding sustainable solutions to Zambia’s governance, economic, and social issues.
