ADEG Raises Alarm Over Low Voter Turnout in Lukanga Ward By-Elections

Lusaka, Zambia24 - (6-11-2024) - The Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation (ADEG) has expressed serious concerns regarding the alarmingly low voter turnout during the recent by-elections in Lukanga Ward, Central Province.

With only 692 out of 3,948 registered voters participating, ADEG underscores that such apathy poses a significant threat to democratic health, which relies on robust citizen engagement.

In a statement issued by Yona Mbewe, the Provincial Coordinator for ADEG, the organization highlighted that the low turnout reflects deeper issues within the electoral landscape.

Among the primary factors contributing to this situation is widespread voter disillusionment. Many citizens feel disconnected from the political process and harbor distrust towards elected officials, which deters them from participating in elections.

Moreover, ADEG identified a critical gap in civic education as a contributing factor to voter apathy. The lack of comprehensive information regarding the voting process, the candidates, and the overall importance of civic participation has left many potential voters uninformed and disengaged.

To address these challenges, ADEG is advocating for intensified civic and voter sensitization initiatives. Such efforts are essential to educating citizens about the voting process and the importance of their participation in shaping their governance. Additionally, the organization emphasizes that elected leaders must fulfill their campaign promises to restore faith in the political system and foster trust within their constituencies.

Despite the disappointing turnout, ADEG commended the peaceful conduct observed on polling day, thanking the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the Zambia Police Service for their professionalism. This atmosphere of peace is vital for the integrity of the electoral process and encourages future participation.

ADEG calls upon all stakeholders involved in the electoral process to reflect on the implications of the low voter turnout and to collaborate on implementing measures aimed at enhancing voter engagement.

By fostering an environment where citizens feel empowered to participate in the democratic process, Zambia can strengthen its democratic institutions and promote accountability among elected officials.

ADEG's advocacy for heightened civic engagement and a commitment to fulfilling political promises is crucial for revitalizing democracy in Zambia.

The organization believes that a proactive approach from all parties can lead to increased voter turnout and a more vibrant democratic process in future elections.
