Routes Festival Launched to Inspire Climate Action
By Francis Maingaila
Lusaka, October 8, 2024 — The People's Action for Accountability and Good Governance in Zambia (PAAGZ), in partnership with acclaimed Zambian artist Mathew Tembo and the German Embassy in Zambia, has officially launched the Routes Festival, scheduled to take place from 16th to 19th October 2024. The festival will blend art, music, and environmental advocacy to inspire collective climate action.
During the media briefing, PAAGZ Executive Director Khazike Sakala emphasized the importance of raising awareness about climate change.
“Climate change is not an abstract issue; it directly affects core human rights like life, health, and education,” he remarked.
“We are at a critical juncture where we must act to protect our resources and ensure a sustainable future for our children.”
Sakala highlighted the detrimental effects of drought, water scarcity, and deforestation on livelihoods.
“The depletion of natural resources, including herbs essential for traditional medicine, is a pressing concern. It’s about our health and well-being,” he said.
He noted that climate change has begun to impact healthcare services, making it harder for people to access necessary medications.
The energy crisis in Zambia poses significant challenges, particularly for small businesses reliant on consistent power to support families.
“The energy crisis is affecting every facet of our lives. Families are struggling, and it’s our responsibility to address this issue head-on,” Sakala stated.
He also addressed how traditional customs are being disrupted by climate-related issues.
“Families are now forced to bury loved ones on the same day due to insufficient refrigeration in hospitals, which challenges our cultural norms,” he added.
Sakala urged the media to play a critical role in amplifying climate change discussions.
“Your voice can be a catalyst for change. We need journalists to actively participate in spreading awareness of climate change's impact on everyday life,” he said.
The Routes Festival aims to engage various stakeholders—artists, the media, experts, government, and community organizations—in a collective push for climate action.
The festival will feature community outreach initiatives, seminars, and creative events, including concerts, to ensure ongoing conversations about climate change.
Mathew Tembo, who will headline performances at the festival, stressed the potential of music and art to raise awareness.
“This festival is about more than just entertainment; it’s about using our platforms to inspire change and ensure that we all take responsibility for protecting our environment,” he stated.
“Art has the power to connect people and make the issue of climate change personal and urgent.”
Khazike Sakala praised the collaboration as a unique approach to advocacy.
“The Routes Festival merges creativity with climate action. We hope to ignite conversations that lead to tangible actions,” he explained.
The German Embassy, a major partner in the event, reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability.
“The Routes Festival is a clear example of how art and culture can serve as powerful tools in the fight against climate change,” she noted.
The festival is expected to attract a diverse audience, including environmental activists, artists, musicians, students, and policymakers, all united by the goal of promoting sustainable development in Zambia and beyond.
As Zambia faces growing environmental challenges, the Routes Festival is positioned as a critical moment in galvanizing public support for climate action, with organizers hopeful that the event will have a lasting impact on the country’s climate agenda.
