.. Musonda says ADEG Supports Dialogue Between Lungu and Hichilema

Lusaka, Zambia – (13-10-2024) - The Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation (ADEG) has issued a strong appeal for Zambians to support the church-led initiative to facilitate dialogue between former President Edgar Lungu and current President Hakainde Hichilema.

Gideon Musonda, Executive Director of ADEG, emphasized the need for constructive engagement between the two leaders amidst ongoing national challenges, including economic difficulties and growing political divisions among their supporters in an exclusivetelephoneinterview.

Musonda underscored that genuine dialogue is essential as Zambia approaches the politically charged environment ahead of the 2026 general elections.

“The time for genuine dialogue is now. We need to create a conducive environment where unity in diversity can flourish,” he stated.

“This is not just about the two leaders; it is about the future of our nation and the well-being of all Zambians.”

ADEG believes that discussions between Lungu and Hichilema could pave the way for consensus on constitutional and electoral reforms, crucial for enhancing democratic governance in Zambia.

Musonda pointed out that past attempts at dialogue have often failed due to preconditions set by one party, lack of neutrality from mediators, and insufficient openness.

“Setting pre-conditions to dialogue has proved to be a recipe for failure,” he explained.

“Most previous attempts at dialogue have been attributed to the questioned neutrality of mediators and the giving of preconditions by the parties.”

He called on all stakeholders to refrain from negative comments and actions that could hinder these efforts.

“The credibility of the institutions advocating for this dialogue is strong, and it is now up to the leaders to embrace this opportunity for the benefit of our great nation,” he said.

Musonda said ADEG supports efforts to encourage national unity, tackle urgent economic and social issues, and reinforce Zambia's democratic foundations.

He emphasized, “Together, we can work towards a brighter future for our nation.”
