.... The Ruling UPND wants an Independent investigation into Lungu's casual admission  remarks suggesting that the PF expected victory in the elections won by the UPND

Lusaka, Zambia24 - (29-10-2024) - The United Party for National Development (UPND) is demanding a thorough investigation into former President Edgar Lungu’s recent remarks, suggesting possible interference in Zambia’s electoral process by officials during his administration.

Cheelo Katambo, UPND’s Deputy Media Director these allegations raise critical questions about Zambia's democracy and the integrity of the 2021 election.

Lungu’s statement hinted that senior officials from his Patriotic Front (PF) party, reportedly embedded within the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), expected an electoral outcome in their favor, a claim the UPND views as a direct threat to democratic values.

"These admissions indicate the need for transparency," stated Katambo.

"The public deserves to know if there was a deliberate attempt to skew the election results in favor of one party," he added.

Katambo argues that, without a full investigation, the ECZ’s credibility could be compromised.

He called for an independent audit to examine the role of any PF-linked individuals within the ECZ, emphasizing that accountability is essential to restore public trust.

“If there is evidence of influence, those involved must be held accountable. This is about upholding the democratic process.”

Moreover, Katambo questions whether Lungu’s eligibility in 2021 complied fully with Zambia’s electoral laws, suggesting that if interference occurred, his candidacy may have circumvented lawful processes.

“This issue is bigger than one election; it’s about setting a precedent that no one is above the law,” Katambo argued.

The UPND’s stance reflects a broader concern: if past leadership attempted to manipulate the system, future elections could face similar risks without clear deterrents.

He argue that ignoring such allegations could set a dangerous precedent, one in which electoral processes can be influenced by political insiders.

He insists on immediate action, calling on authorities to prioritize transparency and accountability.

Whether Lungu’s remarks were a casual admission or an indicator of deeper issues within Zambia's electoral framework, the UPND asserts that a comprehensive investigation is in the national interest, essential to safeguarding the country’s democratic integrity.
