Lusaka, Zambia24  - (30-10-2031 - The opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has endorsed President Hakainde Hichilema for the 2026 presidential and general elections, marking a significant alliance with the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).

Hakainde Hichilema, born on June 4, 1962, in Monze, is a prominent Zambian politician and businessman leads UPND founded in 1998 and has become a key figure in Zambian politics.

Hichilema earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Zambia and an MBA from the University of Illinois.

Before entering politics, he enjoyed a successful career in the private sector, working for companies like Deloitte and excelling in finance and agriculture.

MMD president Dr. Nevers Mumba announced the endorsement during a memorandum of understanding signing, emphasizing their commitment to unify the country and improve the lives of Zambians.

Dr. Mumba declared his decision to forego the 2026 presidential race to support Hichilema, conveying a strong message of cooperation and a shared vision for Zambia's future.

He framed the 2026 elections as a choice for Zambians between integrity and corruption, urging political parties to align with the electorate's aspirations.

Dr. Mumba condemned hate speech, tribalism, and divisive politics, citing former U.S. President Barack Obama’s caution on identity politics.

He praised Hichilema’s resilience amid criticism, describing the opposition's attacks as "demonic" while noting the President’s continued focus on addressing Zambia’s challenges.

Dr. Mumba highlighted Hichilema’s leadership during crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and drought, as evidence of his capacity for economic transformation.

He stressed the alliance's intent to present a united front in 2026 by fielding a single candidate and dismantling obstacles to Hichilema’s re-election.

He underscored the importance of collaboration to address national challenges like economic instability and rising living costs, urging public patience in the recovery process.

Dr. Mumba also highlighted their longstanding partnership and called for accountability, respect for Zambia's diverse cultures, and engagement with communities beyond political office as essential for nation-building.

He concluded by affirming the MMD-UPND alliance as a commitment to integrity, unity, and progress for Zambia.

Speaking during the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen their commitment to shared values and Zambia’s long-term development, President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized the importance of unity among political alliances.

He praised alliance partners for prioritizing the nation’s welfare and remaining resilient amid challenges.

“Let us walk KK’s path of unity,” Hichilema urged, honoring Kenneth Kaunda’s legacy.

He stated, “There is no alternative for peace because losing it means losing stability,” and thanked the MMD for their unwavering support, saying, “Some have left, but you remained steadfast.”

Hichilema underscored that unity is essential for Zambia’s growth and recalled past injustices faced by Zambians, particularly women traders under the previous regime, assuring them of support for fair market practices.

He attributed Zambia’s political stability to the alliance’s strength and called for its continuation to overcome challenges.

The President committed to protecting citizens' rights, removing barriers to education, and supporting young people, allocating over K36.1 million in Constituency Development Funds (CDF) for local projects while encouraging Zambians to grow crops for food security.

Hichilema called for unity and resilience as Zambia moves toward a prosperous future, affirming his administration’s dedication to improving the quality of life for all Zambians.

Meanwhile, Charles Milupi, Chairperson for the Council of Presidents within the UPND Alliance, emphasized the critical need for unity among alliance members.

He called for outreach to all Zambians, stating, “We must look beyond our party lines and embrace all Zambians ready to contribute to our goals.”

Milupi highlighted the UPND’s commitment to addressing pressing national challenges, including the cholera outbreak and drought, which are significantly impacting food and energy security.

He reaffirmed the UPND Alliance’s goal of creating a prosperous and inclusive Zambia that offers equal opportunities for all citizens.

A strong advocate for anti-corruption efforts, Milupi stressed the importance of a balanced approach that ensures justice without the perception of persecution.

He urged law enforcement agencies to adhere to due process and avoid arrests driven by social media pressures, stating, “The fight against corruption must be rigorous but fair.”

Milupi also expressed robust support for President Hakainde Hichilema, praising his resilience and commitment to tackling the nation’s challenges.

He noted the historical economic management of the MMD, which achieved an 8% growth rate in 2005, asserting that this legacy will support the UPND’s vision for restoring economic stability.

“Our alliance brings a legacy of proven economic management, which will be central to the UPND’s mission,” he stated.

Additionally, Milupi indicated that the MMD supports the UPND’s memorandum of understanding, signaling a unified strategy for the upcoming elections.

His address underscored the UPND Alliance’s key priorities: unity, strong anti-corruption measures, support for President Hichilema, and a commitment to economic stability.
