Zambia’s last-minute withdrawal from hosting global digital rights forum raises concern over democratic openness and international credibility

Lusaka, Zambia24  --- (5-5-2026) -- The shock cancellation of RightsCon 2026—an event widely expected to position Zambia prominently on the global stage as a champion of digital rights, civic engagement, and democratic openness—has triggered concern among civil society actors and international stakeholders.

George Shonga, Executive Director of the Measures of Justice and Democracy Foundation, described the decision by the Government of the Republic of Zambia to call off the conference just days before its scheduled commencement in Lusaka as “both regrettable and deeply concerning.”

He noted that the sudden cancellation represents more than a logistical setback. According to him, it is a missed historic opportunity for Zambia and the Southern African region to host one of the world’s most influential platforms on human rights in the digital age, particularly at a time when digital governance issues are increasingly shaping democratic participation globally.

RightsCon, organised by the international organisation , is a major global forum that brings together governments, civil society organisations, technology companies, and researchers to engage on pressing issues such as online freedoms, surveillance, digital inclusion, and civic space.

Shonga further stated that the Measures of Justice and Democracy Foundation stands in solidarity with Access Now and the wider global community of civil society actors, policymakers, and innovators who had committed time, resources, and expertise to the Lusaka convening.

He called for clear and transparent communication from the Government of the Republic of Zambia regarding the circumstances that led to the cancellation. He also urged a renewed and demonstrable commitment to democratic values, civic openness, and constructive engagement with the global community.

The development has raised questions among observers about Zambia’s preparedness to host major international governance platforms and the broader implications for its reputation on the global stage.

As reactions continue, stakeholders are calling for accountability, clarity, and renewed efforts to ensure Zambia remains actively engaged in global conversations on digital rights and democratic governance.
