Lusaka, Zambia24 --- (29-05-2026) -- Kaumbwe Constituency has received a major solar power boost following the donation of solar mini-grid systems from Chinese company Simba New Materials Technology Company Limited, with the Government of Zambia officially receiving the equipment for installation at selected schools and rural health facilities as part of efforts to expand clean and reliable electricity access in underserved areas.
He said the first phase of the project will see the installation of solar photovoltaic systems and battery storage units at nine public schools and five rural health centres.
“Kaumbwe has received a solar power boost that represents an important milestone in government’s continued efforts to provide clean, reliable and sustainable energy services, especially in rural and underserved communities,” Professor Mushifwa said.
He noted that rural areas continue to face major electricity challenges compared to urban centres, adding that the donation would help bridge that gap and improve essential services.
The donated systems include a 49-kilowatt solar photovoltaic capacity and a 130-kilowatt-hour energy storage system, designed to ensure continuous power supply even at night.
Professor Mushifwa said energy storage was a critical component of renewable energy systems, as it guarantees reliability beyond daylight hours.
He further said the initiative aligns with government’s broader strategy to diversify Zambia’s energy mix in response to climate change impacts on hydropower generation.
Meanwhile, Simba New Materials Technology Company Limited Chairperson Daisy Xun said the donation reflects strong cooperation between Zambia and China in promoting renewable energy and sustainable development.
She said the project, valued at about US$350,000, will eventually benefit 35 public schools and 12 rural health centres once fully rolled out.
Ms Xun said the company will oversee installation, commissioning and technical support to ensure smooth implementation and long-term sustainability of the systems.
“The project is designed to address long-standing electricity shortages in remote communities and support education and healthcare services through clean energy,” she said.
She said the solar systems will enhance teaching conditions and enable schools to integrate technology into education delivery.
He said the intervention would not only benefit schools and clinics but also surrounding communities and small businesses through improved energy access.
Dr Mwanza also disclosed that discussions are underway for possible establishment of a battery assembly plant in Zambia by the Chinese firm.
Beneficiaries’ representative Collins Langa said the solar systems would transform lives in the constituency, enabling learners to study at night and improving emergency services at health facilities.
He assured that local communities would take responsibility for safeguarding the equipment to ensure long-term benefits.
The project is expected to strengthen rural electrification efforts and support Zambia’s broader goal of expanding access to clean and sustainable energy across the country.
