Ethical Media Reporting on Women

NGOCC Calls for Responsible Journalism and Positive Portrayal of Women and Girls Ahead of the August General Elections

Lusaka, Zambia24  --  (3rd May 2026) -'The Non-governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has called on the media in Zambia to strengthen positive and inclusive reporting on women and girls, warning against the continued use of harmful stereotypes and gender-based attacks, particularly as the country heads towards the August general elections.

NGOCC Board Chairperson Beauty Katebe told Zambia24 that the media must play a responsible role in promoting gender equality and protecting women from harmful portrayals.

She said NGOCC joins the global community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day under the theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security.” She also praised the media for its role in promoting democracy, accountability, and gender equality.

Katebe said the media has helped highlight important issues affecting women, youth, and persons with disabilities. These include gender-based violence, economic empowerment, access to services, and leadership participation.

She said this coverage has helped shape public debate, influence policy, and challenge harmful social norms.

However, NGOCC noted that women and girls are still underrepresented in media coverage. It also said they are often shown in negative or limiting ways.

The organisation urged journalists to ensure fair, inclusive, and respectful reporting. It said media coverage should reflect the diversity of women in society.

NGOCC also expressed concern over rising gendered political attacks ahead of the elections. It warned that female candidates are being exposed to sexualisation, ridicule, and harassment.

The council said such behaviour undermines women’s participation in politics and weakens democracy.

“We appeal to media houses not to promote gender-based violence or sexist narratives, but to uphold ethical and balanced reporting,” Katebe said.

NGOCC further called on journalists to focus on issue-based reporting and to provide equal coverage to female candidates.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to working with the media to promote responsible journalism that informs, empowers, and protects the dignity of women and girls.
