Lusala, Zambia24 --- (11-03-2026) - The (ZCTU) has boycotted holding union business meetings, workshops, elective conferences, or any other official events in hotels that deny workers the right to belong to trade unions.
ZCTU President said the decision during the 10th Board meeting was necessary to protect workers’ rights and reinforce the principle of freedom of association, a decision made at its 10th Board meeting to reinforce the Congress’s commitment to defending workers’ freedom of association.
Mr. Mulala said the move comes amid growing concern over violations of workers’ rights, particularly in the hospitality industry, where some establishments allegedly prevent employees from joining unions. He emphasized that the labour movement could not continue to support businesses that undermine the very rights unions are mandated to defend.
He added that the ZCTU would continue to collaborate with employers who respect and adhere to Zambia’s labour laws. The Congress will also maintain its policy of naming and shaming employers with poor labour practices to encourage compliance with labour regulations.
Mr. Mulala urged non-compliant employers to align their operations with the law and called on all stakeholders to respect workers’ rights and uphold Zambia’s labour standards.
The ZCTU said the decision forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the protection of workers and promote decent work across the country.
