Lusaka, Zambia24 — (11-01-2026) — The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has seized about 100 loaves of bread from Yatu Bakery in Kalingalinga after inspectors discovered the products were underweight.

Sandra Mwila, ZMA Senior Public Relations Officer, told Zambia24 that the seizure followed intensified inspections this January, part of ZMA’s routine checks on bakeries and other commodities to protect consumers and ensure fair trade practices.

“During the inspection on 8 January 2026, we examined Yatu Sliced Bread and Super Big Loaf, labeled as 800 grams and 700 grams respectively. The actual weights fell short of the declared quantities, in direct violation of the Metrology Act,” she stated.

She explained that non-compliant products cannot be allowed in the market. As a result, the 100 loaves were seized and later disposed of through the Magistrate Court.

“This action sends a clear message to all traders: ZMA will not tolerate cheating consumers,” Mwila added.

Mwila urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicions of underweight or inaccurately measured products.

“Consumer vigilance is critical. We are ready to investigate all complaints and protect the rights of Zambians,” she emphasized.
She reminded bakeries and traders that compliance with the Metrology Act is mandatory.

“All bread and other packaged commodities must match the declared net quantity. Failure to comply will attract strict penalties, including seizures, fines, or prosecution in court,” Mwila warned.

According to Mwila, ZMA operates under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, with the mandate to maintain national measurement standards, certify and calibrate measuring instruments, and enforce compliance for both local and imported pre-packaged goods.

She concluded that the seizure at Yatu Bakery demonstrates ZMA’s unwavering commitment to protecting consumers and promoting fair trade practices nationwide.

“We will continue to act decisively against any trader found violating the law,” Mwila said.
