The Centre for Peace Research and Advocacy (CPRA) has congratulated Mr. Bright Nundwe and the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) on their victory in the Chawama Parliamentary by-election.

CPRA Executive Director, Mr. Cliffton Chifuwe, described the result as a positive development for Zambia’s democracy.

He said: “This opposition victory reflects the maturity of Zambia’s democratic system and the respect citizens have for constitutional processes.”

The organisation also commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for conducting a professional and credible election.

“The efficient management of the poll and timely release of results enhanced public confidence in the electoral process,” Chifuwe added.

Political parties and candidates were praised for maintaining peaceful campaigns. “This by-election demonstrated that politics should focus on ideas and policies rather than violence or intimidation,” CPRA said in a statement.

The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) was also acknowledged for respecting freedoms of association, assembly, and expression. Chifuwe noted: “Respect for these freedoms played a key role in ensuring a calm and orderly electoral environment.”

CPRA lauded the Zambia Police Service for providing professional security without undermining civil liberties. The organisation further recognised the contributions of civil society organisations, election monitors, the media, and community leaders in promoting voter education, transparency, and accountability.

CPRA called on all stakeholders to remain peaceful and tolerant.

“Sustaining peace before, during, and after elections is a shared national responsibility,” the organisation said.
