ZMA, China’s Metrology Institute Sign Cooperation Agreement

Lusaka, Zambia24  --- (December 18, 2025) -- The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Metrology (NIM) of the People’s Republic of China to strengthen cooperation in metrology, focusing on capacity building, technical exchange and improved measurement standards.

The MoU was signed in Beijing by ZMA Executive Director Humphrey Nkobeni and NIM Director General Li Wentao, marking the start of a structured partnership between the two institutions.

ZMA Senior Public Relations Officer Sandra Mwila said the agreement establishes a framework for collaboration in key areas including metrology research, calibration, testing, certification and technical capacity development, which are critical to supporting industry and trade facilitation.

She said the cooperation is expected to enhance ZMA’s technical capacity, improve traceability to international measurement standards and strengthen the quality of services delivered to industry and the public.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by senior officials from both institutions, including Guo Huanxin, Director General of the Department of Metrology under China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), who said the MoU would deepen bilateral cooperation in areas such as food safety and scientific research.

ZMA Board Chairperson Musamala Josia Nyirongo said the partnership would strengthen consumer protection and fair trade through improved measurement accuracy, while reaffirming ZMA’s commitment to effective implementation of the agreement.

NIM Director General Li Wentao said the MoU would further strengthen cooperation between the two institutions in the field of metrology.
