Lusaka, Zambia – (15-12-2025) - The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has officially adopted Timothy Kantenga as its candidate for the Chawama parliamentary seat, which fell vacant following the prolonged absenteeism of the former MP after her father’s death in June 2025.

Garry Nkombo, UPND Chairperson for Elections and Campaigns, announced Kantenga’s adoption on Monday, describing the selection process as rigorous but transparent.

He emphasized the party’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment, noting that the outcome represents a victory for women, differently-abled individuals, and broader party representation.

“Today, I am privileged to announce that Mr. Timothy Kantenga will be our candidate for the Chawama by-election. All six candidates who contested the process were highly capable, but Mr. Kantenga emerged through consensus,” Nkombo said.

He appealed to party members to approach the by-election in a spirit of peace, underlining that violence would not be tolerated.

Kantenga, expressing gratitude to the party and his supporters, pledged to uphold the confidence placed in him.

“I am humbled to have been chosen from among the cream of the crop. I cannot win this election without the support of my colleagues and the constituency,” he said, promising to issue a detailed plan in the coming days.

Losing candidates also signaled their support for Kantenga. Nchimunya Chibulu, one of the contenders, pledged to back the adopted candidate and even authorized her home to serve as a campaign center.

Nonde Sikasote, a former provincial secretary, reaffirmed his commitment to helping Kantenga address constituency challenges and deliver results for the people of Chawama.

The UPND leadership has called for a peaceful and issue-based campaign in the upcoming by-election, emphasizing unity and collective effort as key to maintaining the party’s dominance in the constituency.
