Unsafe Underwear Confiscated

Lusaka, Zambia24, - (October 15, 2025) – The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has warned that used undergarments pose serious health risks after seizing 69 boxes of donated underwear in Rufunsa District.
The agency says such products can transmit skin rashes, fungal infections, and sexually transmitted infections, highlighting the dangers of non-compliant used textiles.
Brian Hatyoka, ZCSA’s Manager for Communications and Public Relations, told Zambia24 in a statement that the seized consignment, donated to a faith-based organization, violated Zambian Standard ZS 559: Inspection and Acceptance Criteria for Used Textile Products, which prohibits the importation and sale of used undergarments.
“The importation and distribution of used underwear—including pyjamas, bras, tights, camisoles, night gowns, and vests—poses significant health risks,” Hatyoka said.
“This standard was made compulsory to safeguard consumers, and ZCSA will not tolerate non-compliance. We urge all importers and recipients of donated used textiles to comply immediately.”
The boxes, confiscated on October 9, 2025, are pending disposal under the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017.
Hatyoka further encouraged the public to report banned products to the nearest ZCSA office, stressing the agency’s vigilance in enforcing compulsory standards to protect consumers from potential health hazards.
As part of its outreach, ZCSA will host a public sensitization event on Friday, October 17, from 10:00 to 13:00 hours at Maramba Market in Livingstone.
Traders and consumers will be educated on the dangers of used undergarments, unregulated potable spirits, and other products covered by compulsory standards.
“The Agency remains committed to protecting public health, consumer safety, and the environment by enforcing compulsory standards,” Hatyoka added.
