Lusaka, Zambia24 – (September 16, 2025) – The Zambia National Marketeers Association (ZANAMACA) has welcomed the government’s decision to increase electricity supply hours to markets and densely populated townships, calling it a “lifeline” for small businesses and households struggling amid the country’s power deficit.
Addressing the media during a press briefing, ZANAMACA President Mr. Mupila Kameya said the move will protect household incomes, prevent the collapse of small businesses, and provide traders with much-needed stability.
“Marketeers are among the most affected by load shedding. Our ability to store fresh goods, run small equipment, and extend trading hours has been disrupted," he said.
He added: "The President’s assurance that markets and households will be prioritised gives us confidence that no Zambian will be left behind."
He added: "The President’s assurance that markets and households will be prioritised gives us confidence that no Zambian will be left behind."ZANAMACA praised government efforts to diversify the energy mix and reduce reliance on hydro power.
He said the government plans to generate over 740 megawatts of solar power within the next 12 months across seven provinces, creating jobs for young people.
The association encouraged members to invest in renewable energy at both household and market levels to strengthen resilience and support national growth.
Infrastructure expansions at Maamba Thermal Power Station and new projects at Chisamba and CEC Itimpi were cited as evidence of the government’s commitment to energy security.
Mr. Kameya also welcomed petroleum sector reforms, including the open access regime on the TAZAMA pipeline, which has reduced diesel pump prices by nearly 30 percent, and plans for a new multi-product pipeline with Tanzania to secure reliable fuel supply for businesses.
He expressed support for Zambia’s participation in the Mission-300 Initiative, which commits African nations to deliver 10 gigawatts of clean energy by 2030.
"The initiative is expected to strengthen national and regional energy reliability and open opportunities for local investment," he said.
The association highlighted government support for traders through diesel-powered generators installed in selected markets, ensuring continuity of trade during load-shedding hours.
Mr. Kameya urged members to remain patient, united, and proactive. “Markets, farms, and small businesses cannot thrive without reliable power. Investing in renewable solutions such as solar energy will contribute to your own resilience while supporting national growth.
The pain we are experiencing today is real, but temporary. With these measures, the future promises reliable electricity for every household, township, and market. It will not be dark forever,” he said.
