Lusaka, Zambia24  - (02 Sept. 2025) — The Minister of Energy, Hon. Makozo Chikote, has dissolved the Board of Directors of the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) with immediate effect, marking a transition in leadership at the institution responsible for extending electricity access to rural communities.

According to a statement from Ministry of Energy Principal Public Relations Officer Bob Sianjalika, the dissolution was undertaken in accordance with the Rural Electrification Act No. 5 of 2023, which empowers the minister to reconstitute the board when necessary.

While the ministry did not specify reasons for the move, Minister Chikote expressed appreciation for the board’s contributions during its tenure, noting their efforts in guiding the authority’s work.

The REA continues to play a vital role in advancing government policy on expanding the national grid and promoting alternative energy solutions for remote areas. Its projects remain central to bridging the electricity access gap, which is crucial for social and economic development.

The decision comes as the government continues to prioritize rural electrification as a key driver for improving livelihoods, supporting small-scale industries, and enhancing access to education and healthcare in underserved communities.

Stakeholders are expected to observe developments regarding the appointment of a new board, which will be instrumental in guiding the next phase of rural electrification efforts across the country.
