Lusaka, Zambia – (Tuesday, July 8, 2025) -
The United Party for National Development (UPND) has adopted Mufunero Malama as its official candidate for the Mfuwe parliamentary by-election scheduled for August 7, 2025.

UPND Elections Chairperson Garry Nkombo made the announcement in Lusaka on Tuesday, following what he described as a competitive and transparent selection process.

“We received applications from highly qualified individuals. After thorough consultations, we agreed that Mr. Mufunero Malama is the right candidate to represent the party in Mfuwe,” Nkombo said.

He thanked all aspiring candidates for their participation and urged them to remain committed to the party.

Malama, who hails from Chief Tenfwe’s area, accepted the nomination and pledged to work hard to secure the seat.

“I am honoured by the party’s trust. I will serve with integrity and focus on development in Mfuwe,” he said.

Other contenders, including Col. Peter Chipasha (Rtd), Chibesa Resford, Webby Chilufya, and Nicholas Mumba, commended the party for a fair process and pledged to support Malama’s campaign.

“This was a credible process,” said Col. Chipasha. “I fully support Mr. Malama and call on our members to do the same.”

With the campaign officially underway, UPND has called for unity among members to retain the Mfuwe seat in what is expected to be a closely contested by-election.
