Lusaka, Zambia24 - (July 4, 2025) - The Chewa Heritage Foundation – Zambia Chapter has announced that this year’s Kulamba Traditional Ceremony of the Chewa people of Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique will take place on August 30, 2025, at Mkaika in Katete District, Eastern Province.
National Fundraising Committee Chairperson Mr. Reuben Kamanga said preparations are well underway to ensure the successful hosting of the internationally recognized cultural event, which is expected to draw large crowds from across the region.
“To ensure the smooth hosting of this year’s Kulamba Ceremony, we have lined up a number of fundraising activities, including a fundraising dinner dance scheduled for July 26, 2025, at the Government Complex in Lusaka,” Mr. Kamanga stated.
He described the Kulamba Ceremony as one of Zambia’s most significant and vibrant traditional ceremonies, drawing participants and dignitaries from across Southern Africa.
“This year’s ceremony is expected to attract a huge number of people. The organizing committee has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything is in place," said Kamanga
"We urge the public to turn up in large numbers for both the fundraising dinner and the main event in Katete,” he added.
Mr. Kamanga appealed to the corporate sector and individual well-wishers to support the ceremony by making financial and material contributions, noting that such support is crucial to preserving and celebrating Zambia’s cultural heritage.
The Kulamba Ceremony is an annual gathering of the Chewa people, where traditional leaders from the three countries pay homage to Kalonga Gawa Undi, the Chewa paramount chief.
The event is known for its rich cultural expressions, including the iconic Gule Wamkulu masked dances, traditional music, and colorful displays of Chewa heritage.
Kamanga stressed that the event not only strengthens cultural ties but also promotes tourism, unity, and regional integration among the Chewa-speaking people of Southern Africa.
