Bakeries on Notice

LUSAKA, 16 July 2025 – The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has recorded a 96% compliance rate in bakery inspections conducted nationwide, but has warned that it will take enforcement action against any bakery found selling underweight bread.

The inspections follow concerns raised by the Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) over the alleged sale of bread products that do not meet declared weight standards.

Sandra Mwila, ZMA Senior Public Relations Officer, told journalists that inspections have been ongoing since January 2025, focusing on compliance with Statutory Instrument No. 56 of 2021, which regulates the weight and labelling of pre-packaged goods.

While the 96% compliance rate is encouraging, Mwila acknowledged that some bakeries are still breaching regulations. She reaffirmed ZMA’s commitment to consumer protection and fair trade.

ZMA has pledged to continue targeted and random inspections and ensure that all weighing equipment is verified and accurate. The agency will also launch a nationwide sensitisation campaign to raise awareness among bakeries and manufacturers about legal requirements.

Published from Blogger Prime Android AppZMA commended ZACA for highlighting the issue and urged both the public and consumer bodies to report any suspected non-compliance through ZMA offices or social media channels.

ZMA, established under the Metrology Act No. 6 of 2017, operates under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry (MCTI). It is mandated to maintain national measurement standards and certify measuring instruments used in trade, health, safety, and environmental management.
