Lusaka, Zambia24 (14 June 2025) — Zambia has recognized the growing contribution of the People’s Republic of China to its economic development, with Chinese companies now accounting for over 50 percent of the country’s total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). This milestone reflects the deepening economic partnership between the two countries.

The announcement was made during the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo (CAETE) in Changsha, Hunan Province, where Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for Finance and Economic Development, Mr. Siazongo D. Siakalenge, spoke on behalf of Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Hon. Chipoka Mulenga.

His remarks came at the Hunan Entrepreneurs-China Africa Economic and Trade Promotion Matchmaking Conference, which fosters business ties between African countries and Chinese investors.

Mr. Siakalenge noted that between 2022 and 2024, Zambia’s exports to China represented about 20 percent of its total exports, demonstrating strengthened trade relations.

He promoted the Kafue Multi-Facility Economic Zone (MFEZ) as a strategic investment hub and encouraged Chinese firms to explore opportunities in manufacturing, energy, and resource development.

He also praised the Hunan Provincial Government for supporting Zambia’s export growth, highlighting the important cooperation between the province and Zambia since its independence in 1964.

Minister Mulenga is scheduled to meet with Chinese investors and tour the Zambian pavilion and entrepreneur booths as part of Zambia’s investment promotion activities at the expo.

The growing partnership reflects a broader trend of Chinese investment across Africa, bringing capital, technology transfer, and job creation critical to Zambia’s economic diversification and growth.
