Ruth Chande Ironside: A Trailblazing Woman Paving the Way and Redefining the Business Revolution in Zambia

By Francis Maingaila

Lusaka, Zambia - (09-03-2025) - Zambia is spotlighting remarkable women entrepreneurs who are challenging norms, spurring economic growth, and redefining the future of business.

Despite the enduring challenges of limited access to capital, societal biases, and market barriers, women-led enterprises in Zambia are thriving, setting new standards for success in the business world.

One such trailblazer is Ruth Chande Ironside, the founder and CEO of Mupapa Wood Limited, a company that champions sustainable forestry and community development.

Ruth’s deep passion for nature has translated into a successful business that is not only profitable but also aligned with environmental stewardship.

From humble beginnings with just 18 employees, her company has grown to a workforce of 42, reflecting the strength and viability of her vision.

Mupapa Wood is a model of how sustainable practices can drive both business success and social impact.

Ruth is firm in her belief that women are just as capable as men in running successful businesses.

“We often have to work harder to prove ourselves, but our accomplishments speak volumes,” she says.

For Ruth, success is not only measured by profits but also by the lasting impact on her community and the environment.

Her leadership is proof that women in business bring a unique set of skills—innovation, resilience, and a commitment to long-term solutions.

Refusing to be discouraged by challenges, Ruth views obstacles as stepping stones rather than setbacks.

“The journey to success isn’t easy for anyone, but women face unique challenges that require extra perseverance.

Yet, every challenge motivates me to push forward,” she shares. Ruth’s determination has fueled the growth of her business, positioning Mupapa Wood as a leader in Zambia’s forestry sector.

At the heart of Ruth’s business is her commitment to environmental protection.

“As women, we have an inherent connection to nature, and it's crucial that we take an active role in safeguarding our planet,” she says.

Her company prioritizes eco-friendly practices that contribute to sustainable forestry while creating job opportunities for local communities.

Reflecting on her journey, Ruth notes, “When I think back, it’s been a whirlwind. We started with just 18 employees, and now we’re 42.

There’s been nothing easy about this path, but every achievement proves that women can lead successful enterprises.”

Her company’s growth and commitment to sustainability continue to inspire, showing that women are capable of driving meaningful change.

However, despite the growing number of successful women-led businesses, barriers such as limited access to financing and market constraints persist.

Ruth believes that if Zambia is to fully unlock its economic potential, these challenges must be addressed.

“Women in business are proving their worth every day. What’s needed now is greater support from financial institutions and policymakers,” she emphasizes.

As Zambia celebrates the achievements of women entrepreneurs on this Women’s Day, it is crucial to move from recognition to tangible action.

Supporting women entrepreneurs is not just about achieving gender equality—it’s about unleashing the full economic potential of the nation.

Ruth’s journey exemplifies the success and potential of women in business, but the real question is: Will stakeholders take the necessary steps to support the next generation of women leaders?
