ERB Acts to Resolve Fuel Shortages

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has initiated crucial steps to mitigate fuel shortages that have affected parts of the country.
Chibulu Musonda, Acting Manager – Public Relations, announced that the ERB held a critical meeting on January 10, 2025, with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), petroleum transporters, and Ministry of Energy officials to identify and resolve the logistical challenges causing sporadic fuel stock-outs, particularly petrol.
The meeting, chaired by ERB Board Chairperson James Banda, underscored the urgent need to streamline the distribution network to ensure consistent fuel availability.
Banda emphasized the importance of cooperation within the sector, stating, “It is vital for all players in the petroleum supply chain to work together proactively to maintain a steady flow of fuel. Disruptions must be avoided at all costs.”
In his remarks, Banda reiterated the regulator’s dedication to achieving stability in fuel distribution across the nation, urging stakeholders to engage in continuous dialogue to address emerging issues.
Musonda disclosed that monitoring efforts showed signs of improvement in fuel availability. “As of January 10, 2025, we assessed 619 filling stations across the country. Out of these, 487 were selling both petrol and diesel, while 119 had run out of petrol, and only 19 had no stock of either product,” Musonda said.
Some OMCs assured the ERB during the meeting that their outlets were adequately stocked, with additional consignments en route to replenish supply. This development, according to the ERB, reflects the beginning of a recovery in the fuel situation.
To reassure the public, the ERB has committed to closely monitoring the supply chain daily and providing regular updates.
“The public can be confident that the ERB is taking all necessary steps to normalize the fuel situation and ensure future disruptions are prevented,” Banda noted.
These interventions come as a relief to motorists and businesses that rely heavily on a stable fuel supply.
"By addressing logistical inefficiencies and fostering collaboration, the ERB seeks to safeguard the petroleum sector’s stability and protect the nation’s economic interests," he said.
The regulator’s decisive actions reaffirm its commitment to ensuring the efficient operation of the fuel supply chain, ultimately benefiting both consumers and the wider economy.
