Lusaka, Zambia – January 8, 2025 –
The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has launched the 2025 First Half (H1) Statutory Verification exercise for measuring instruments used in the petroleum sub-sector to enhance fair trade, safeguard consumer interests, and ensure compliance with metrology standards.
Sandra Mwila, Senior Public Relations Officer at ZMA, said the exercise will involve inspections of petroleum measuring instruments at fuel depots and service stations across the country.
“These verifications ensure the accuracy of measurements and protect consumers in Zambia’s petroleum sector,” she said.
A kick-off meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 9, 2025, bringing together officials from the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Energy, regulatory bodies, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), and service technician companies.
Mwila urged the public to check for valid ZMA verification stickers on fuel pumps at filling stations.
“The stickers serve as proof that the instruments have been inspected and certified for compliance with metrology standards,” she emphasized.
Mwila reminded petroleum sector players to adhere to the Metrology Act's regulations and warned against using unapproved instruments and methods, such as weighbridges and dip charts in storage tanks.
“We urge the use of approved methods, including bulk flow meters, ullage marks, and dip charts on tanker trucks,” Mwila stated.
Operating under the Metrology Act No. 6 of 2017, ZMA is responsible for maintaining national measurement standards and certifying the accuracy of instruments in various sectors, including commercial transactions, health, safety, and environmental management.
Through this verification drive, ZMA aims to promote fair trade and protect consumers while ensuring compliance within Zambia’s petroleum sector.
