FOCURRAZ Calls for Action Against Exploitative Practices

By Francis Maingaila

Lusaka, Zambia – December 2, 2024 – The Former and Current Rwandese Refugees Association in Zambia (Focurraz) has expressed deep concern over recent media reports alleging that individuals are involved in unethical and illegal price hikes of essential goods produced and distributed by the Zambian National Service (ZNS).

The association has condemned these practices, calling for immediate action and vigilance from both the public and law enforcement.

Cédric Habimana, the Chairperson of Focurraz, strongly criticized those exploiting the economic hardships faced by the Zambian population, still recovering from the severe drought during the 2023–2024 season.

“It is disheartening to see some individuals taking advantage of the struggles of the Zambian people by inflating prices for their own financial gain,” Habimana said.

He emphasized that such actions undermine public welfare and contribute to increasing economic disparity.

While the report did not confirm whether the perpetrators are foreign investors or refugees, Habimana stressed that these practices could tarnish Zambia’s image and threaten the safety of innocent refugees.

The association’s reaction highlights the potential harm caused by individuals seeking to profit from the economic struggles of others, particularly during a time when Zambia faces significant challenges due to climate-related issues.

Focurraz has pledged to work closely with law enforcement agencies and responsible citizens to identify and report any individuals involved in such exploitative actions.

The association has also made it clear that they will not tolerate dishonesty within their own ranks. “If any member of our association is found participating in these actions, we will take immediate and decisive action,” said Habimana.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy toward dishonesty, especially when it threatens the peaceful and harmonious relationship we have with the Zambian host communities.”

This strong stance comes at a time when Zambia is grappling with the consequences of the 2023–2024 drought, which has left many families struggling with food insecurity and higher living costs.

The ZNS, which plays a key role in the production and distribution of essential goods, is at the center of this controversy, with allegations suggesting that certain individuals are taking advantage of the situation to inflate prices.

The association has called on both its members and the refugee community to act with integrity and caution in all their endeavors.

They have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent further exploitation during a time of national crisis.

Focurraz’s statement sends a strong message against unethical business practices and reinforces the importance of maintaining trust and cooperation between refugees and Zambian communities.

By taking action against price manipulation, the association hopes to ensure that the country’s most vulnerable populations are not further burdened by profiteering at their expense.

As the situation unfolds, the public and law enforcement will be closely monitoring efforts to combat these exploitative actions.

The outcome of these efforts may determine whether Zambia’s efforts to address its current economic challenges can be strengthened or further undermined by individuals seeking to profit at the expense of others.
