... A Step Towards Tackling Youth Unemployment, Says Jephason Kalengo
Chawama Leader Applauds President Hichilema’s Initiative, Calls for Effective Implementation
Lusala, Zambia24 - (15-11-2024) - Jephason Kalengo, a young leader from Chawama, has expressed strong support for President Hakainde Hichilema’s newly launched Voluntary National Service Programme, aimed at addressing youth unemployment and poverty in the constituency.
Kalengo believes the initiative will equip young people with essential skills and discipline, while curbing the rise of unruly youth, locally known as 'Ma Junky.'
The programme, set to be implemented progressively based on available resources, will offer young people training in various sectors, including the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force (ZAF), Zambia National Service (ZNS), Zambia Police, and Zambia Correctional Service.
President Hichilema highlighted that the programme will help young people contribute positively to society.
Kalengo, who previously served on the Ward Development Committee, emphasized the challenges facing Chawama, where over 500,000 residents, many living in unplanned settlements, struggle with high poverty and unemployment.
"Chawama is grappling with high levels of poverty and unemployment, contributing to an increase in unruly youths," Kalengo said.
"The National Service Programme offers a path to give our youth structure, discipline, and opportunities to be productive."
He also stressed the importance of policy and legal frameworks to ensure the programme’s success.
"For this initiative to work, we need robust policy backing and collaboration between the government, local leaders, and communities," Kalengo stated.
He added that the Chawama Komboni Council, which he leads, is engaging with the Office of the President and State House to discuss strategies for effective implementation at the community level.
“The youth need tangible opportunities, and the National Service Programme could be a game-changer if implemented properly,” Kalengo explained.
He expressed confidence that the initiative could significantly reduce unemployment and poverty while fostering national development.
Kalengo’s support for the programme reflects broader optimism in Chawama and other communities facing similar challenges. With the right policy support and community involvement, Kalengo believes the programme will bring lasting positive change to Zambia.
