Compassionate Leadership
... Matero Hopeful Mukobela supports burn victim's safe return home and recovery
By Francis Maingaila
Matero, Zambia – November 14, 2024
The United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate for Matero Constituency, Evans Mukobela, has taken compassionate action to assist Zebron Mwanza, a burn victim from Katete in Eastern Province, who was left stranded at Matero Level One Hospital after his discharge due to financial constraints.
Mwanza, who suffered severe burns, had been receiving treatment at the hospital but was unable to return home after his discharge on November 8, 2024, as he lacked the funds for transportation back to Katete.
Upon learning of Mwanza’s situation, Mukobela promptly arranged transportation to ensure Mwanza could continue his recovery with family support.
He also provided Mwanza with K2,500 in pocket money to assist him during this recovery period.
When asked about his decision to intervene, Mukobela emphasized his commitment to supporting vulnerable community members.
“This is about compassion and community responsibility,” he said.
“When I learned that Mr. Mwanza was stuck in Matero without a way home or access to ongoing medical care, I felt it was my duty to help him. No one should face such hardship alone, especially after enduring a life-threatening injury.”
Mukobela explained that his assistance reflects his broader approach to public service.
“My goal is to bring practical solutions to real challenges people face every day,” he stated.
“A burn injury can take a significant toll on a person physically, emotionally, and financially. For someone like Mr. Mwanza, who was stranded far from home and without resources, the simple act of providing transportation and support could make a world of difference. I believe that leaders should be willing to act and not wait for others to step in.”
Mukobela also highlighted the importance of access to health support for all. “Health and well-being are basic rights,” he added.
“Every individual in Matero and across Zambia deserves access to care and compassion, especially when faced with extreme hardship. By assisting Mr. Mwanza, I hope to set an example of the kind of responsive, caring leadership I aim to bring to Matero Constituency if elected.”
Mukobela was accompanied by prominent figures during the hospital visit, including Chama America, also known as "The Big Politician," and his friend, Victor Kapungwe, famously known as "Ground FBI."
Chama America praised Mukobela's generosity, stating, “What Evans did today is the type of leadership we need in Zambia—someone who is genuinely concerned about the well-being of others, beyond political campaigns. It’s not every day that you see a politician go above and beyond to assist someone in need.”
Victor Kapungwe echoed Chama’s sentiments, commending Mukobela’s actions.
“This was a rare act of kindness and empathy,” Kapungwe remarked.
“Evans didn’t hesitate for a second to step in when he learned about Mr. Mwanza’s situation. This is the kind of leadership we need in our communities—leaders who are willing to make real, tangible impacts on people's lives.”
Both Chama and Kapungwe stressed that Mukobela’s actions set a powerful example for other leaders in the country, urging them to prioritize people’s needs and well-being in their daily work.
“Under Evans Mukobela, Matero will undoubtedly be in safe hands,” said Chama America.
“His actions speak louder than any campaign promises. He’s already proven that he cares about the people of Matero, and I have no doubt that he will continue to fight for their welfare as their Member of Parliament. I urge the people of Matero to support him in his quest to lead this constituency.”
Kapungwe added, “Evans has shown us what true leadership looks like. His compassion and willingness to act in the interest of the people make him the right choice for Matero. The people of this constituency deserve a leader who is committed to their well-being, and Evans is that leader. Let’s stand behind him and ensure he becomes our next Member of Parliament.”
Zebron Mwanza, visibly moved by Mukobela’s generosity, expressed his deep gratitude for the support he received.
“I can’t thank Mr. Mukobela enough for what he has done for me,” Mwanza said.
“When I was discharged from the hospital, I had no idea how I would get back home. I was stranded and didn’t know where to turn. But when Mr. Mukobela heard about my situation, he didn’t hesitate to step in and help me.
He took care of everything—my transport, medical follow-up, and even gave me money to help with my recovery. This kindness has touched me deeply.”
Mwanza explained that Mukobela’s support has given him hope during a very difficult time.
“I’ve been through so much in the past few weeks. The burns were painful, and the stress of being far from home made things even harder. But thanks to Mr. Mukobela, I can now go home to my family and continue my healing. I will forever be grateful to him for showing me that there are still people out there who truly care.”
“I never expected such generosity, especially from someone who doesn’t know me personally,” Mwanza continued.
“It’s rare to find someone willing to help a stranger like this, and it’s something I will never forget. I hope that the people of Matero recognize his true character and support him as he strives to make a difference in the lives of others.”
