Lusaka, Sunday 10th November 2024 – The Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of Father Alexander Muyebe, SJ, a Catholic Priest and the Director of the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR). His untimely death marks a significant loss to both the religious community and the healthcare sector in Zambia.

In an official statement, Prof. Mulindi Mwanahamentu, the Board Chairperson of HPCZ, conveyed the council’s condolences, describing Fr. Muyebe as a "valued member" of the Health Facility Licensing and Accreditation Committee, where he served since his appointment in March 2023.

"Fr. Muyebe's dedication and vigilance were evident in every aspect of his work," said Prof. Mwanahamentu.

"His insights and unwavering commitment to upholding high standards in healthcare delivery have left an indelible mark on the council and the wider community."

Fr. Muyebe’s contributions were particularly vital in the area of licensing new health facilities, where he played a key role in ensuring that healthcare institutions across the nation adhered to the rigorous standards required for quality care.

His work in this domain was not only about ensuring compliance but also about advocating for continuous improvement in the sector.

"His service went beyond regulatory duties; he was driven by a profound commitment to improving healthcare for all Zambians," Prof. Mwanahamentu remarked.

Despite his primary vocation as a Catholic priest, Fr. Muyebe’s influence extended well beyond religious matters.

His passion for social justice found expression in his advocacy for accessible and quality healthcare, reflecting his broader vision for a fairer and more equitable society.

"Fr. Muyebe believed that the right to health is an essential component of human dignity, and this principle guided his actions both in his priestly ministry and his work with the HPCZ," the HPCZ statement added.

HPCZ extended its condolences to Fr. Muyebe’s family, the Jesuit community, and his colleagues at JCTR, offering prayers for strength during this difficult time.

The statement concluded with a call for remembrance of Fr. Muyebe’s legacy in healthcare.

"His dedication to health facility standards and social justice will be remembered as a significant part of his legacy," Prof. Mwanahamentu said.

In this period of mourning, the council also prayed for the eternal peace of Father Alexander Muyebe, SJ. "May the soul of our beloved Father rest in eternal peace," concluded the HPCZ statement.

Fr. Muyebe’s passing leaves a profound void in both the Jesuit community and the health sector, but his contributions to social justice and healthcare will continue to resonate for years to come.
