ZMP Postpones Copperbelt Manifesto Launch

Lusaka, Zambia – (23-10-2024) - Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) has announced the postponement of its highly anticipated party manifesto launch on the Copperbelt following a rejection by the Zambia Police Services at Kantanshi Police Station.

ZMP Media Director Daniel Nonde, told Zambia24 that the police's decision was made after conducting a "thorough security and political assessment" in the Mufulira district. The assessment concluded that the current social and political climate in the area posed significant challenges to holding the event.

The first issue highlighted by the police is the community's recovery from a recent incident involving graduate soldier recruits. According to the statement, residents in Mufulira were subjected to an "undeserved beating" by the recruits, an incident that has left them traumatized.

Additionally, the police cited ongoing concerns in the neighboring Kankoyo area, where residents are preparing to stage a city-wide protest against sulfur dioxide emissions from Mopani Copper Mines. The environmental issues have prompted widespread unrest, further complicating security efforts.

The police also noted operational challenges, with the Kantanshi Police Station facing fuel shortages, leading to immobility in responding to security needs in the district.

Nonde expressed regret over the postponement but emphasized that the party remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents. He assured ZMP members and the public that a new date for the manifesto launch will be communicated once the situation improves.
