UPND Demands Action Against Cyber Abuses
.... The Party Criticizes ZICTA and Police for Inaction on Defamatory Online Attacks against the head of state

Lusaka, Zambia24 - (14-10-2024) - The United Party for National Development (UPND) has urgently called for immediate action from the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) and the Zambia Police in response to a troubling surge in defamatory online attacks against President Hakainde Hichilema and ordinary citizens.
UPND Deputy Media Director Cheelo Katambo strongly condemned the rise of cyber abuse, accusing ZICTA and the police of failing to protect the dignity of the President.
"This despicable behavior, spreading baseless accusations against President Hichilema, is an insult to our laws and national identity. We cannot stand by while our President is attacked, and the institutions responsible for protection remain silent," Katambo stated.
He criticized both ZICTA and the police for their lack of action, labeling it a failure of their constitutional responsibilities.
"ZICTA was created to regulate cyberspace, yet these slanderous attacks go unchecked. The police, responsible for maintaining law and order, have allowed criminals to act with impunity," he added.
The UPND demanded accountability from these institutions and warned of potential legal action if they fail to act.
Katambo expressed concern about the damage this ongoing cyber abuse could inflict on Zambia's international reputation and investment climate.
"If ZICTA and the police continue to do nothing, they will be held accountable for every lie spread against our President. This is about safeguarding Zambia’s future. What investor would feel safe in a country where the leadership is disrespected without consequence?" he questioned.
Katambo made it clear that the UPND will not tolerate any further inaction. "We will not allow Zambia to be undermined by cyber abuse and complacent institutions. ZICTA and the police must act now, or we will demand their removal for failing the nation," he declared.
The UPND stands firm in its commitment to protecting Zambia’s leadership and ensuring national stability, calling for swift action against those who spread malicious lies in cyberspace.
