UNZASU Voters Await election Results
... Tensions escalate as vote counting continues
Lusaka, Zambia24 - (19-10-2024) - The results of the University of Zambia Students' Union (UNZASU) elections remain undisclosed, causing growing frustration among students who voted on Thursday, with suspicion of election rigging emerging by Saturday, particularly among supporters of one candidate, Chabu.
A second-year computer science student, speaking anonymously, alleged that "Team Governor is trying to stop Chabu from winning because he has more support, especially from the first- and second-year students."
The student added, "Chabu would be a better advocate for students' welfare than the leaders we've had before."
Tensions escalated as a crowd of students gathered outside the university’s main hall, chanting "Power to the people!" and attempting to enter the building.
This prompted polling agents to flee for safety.
Concerns of multiple voting and external funding also surfaced, with some students accusing the election committee of using an unreliable system to verify student credentials.
"The system they're using is not working. We don't even know if those voting are real students," another student complained.
As of this report, the UNZASU electoral team remained in a meeting, and the outcome was still pending.
According to UNZA public relations officer Theophilus Kolobeki, "UNZASU spent K400,000 on the election, printing 4,500 ballots for the 18,000 registered members."
