Lusaka, Zambia24 – (11-10-2024) - MTN Mobile Money has partnered with the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) to modernize toll payments across Zambia. The collaboration introduces a token-based system for faster, cashless payments at toll gates, aimed at improving travel convenience and promoting road safety.

MTN Mobile Money Chief Sales and Distribution Officer, Abdul Sherif, highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating, “The toll card initiative is a major milestone in improving convenience and efficiency for road users. We are excited to reduce delays and frustrations associated with cash-based payments.”

The system allows motorists to load and reload tokens via MTN Mobile Money, eliminating the need for physical cash and enabling real-time transactions. “With a few taps on their phones, motorists can complete their toll payments without delay,” Reda explained.

Daniel Mtonga, acting Chief Executive Officer at the NRFA, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with MTN enhances the National Road Tolling Program, which remains a critical source of domestic revenue for road infrastructure development since its launch in 2013.

This initiative aligns with our goal of mobilizing financial resources for road construction and maintenance through tolls, fuel levies, road taxes, and fines.”

Mtonga also discussed the electronic toll card introduced in 2018, which provides a faster, secure, and convenient way for users to pay tolls. He noted that this system has helped to reduce congestion and risks associated with cash handling at toll booths.

“Currently, we have 120,000 electronic toll cards in use, contributing to 35% of the total toll revenue. MTN Zambia alone processed 3,000 transactions from January to September 2024 through the MoMo platform,” he revealed.

Additionally, the toll card offers fleet management functionality, allowing users to track vehicle movements through SMS notifications sent after toll payments. “This feature is particularly beneficial for businesses that rely on efficient fleet operations,” Mtonga added.

The collaboration with MTN and its mobile money service (MoMo) allows users to top up their toll cards from their mobile devices, significantly enhancing convenience.

Mtonga stated, “This partnership is expected to grow, further improving efficiency and convenience for road users, and ensuring that our road infrastructure continues to develop.”

This partnership is anticipated to streamline toll payments, making road travel easier and more efficient across the country.
