...  183 Students Graduate from IAM Zambia’s Class of 2023

Lusaka, Zambia24 (16 November 2024) – IAM Zambia today celebrated the graduation of 183 students, marking a significant milestone for the Class of 2023.

The ceremony, held in Olympia, saw graduates receive diplomas in various vocational fields, including Food Production, Cosmetology, Fashion Design, Textile Technology, and Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Angela Munkombwe, Country Director of IAM Zambia, opened the ceremony with remarks on the institution’s progress and future growth.

Munkombwe highlighted the institution’s success in expanding its student base, from a modest start of 20 students to 183 graduates this year.

“Our plan is to grow the institution. If the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) can assist, we would appreciate more support to enroll additional students,” Munkombwe said.

“Often, we apply for funding to support 80 students, but we are allocated funds for only 20,” she explained.

She also spoke about the institution’s commitment to tackling youth unemployment through skills development.

“Most of our graduates either start their own businesses or secure employment with the organizations we partner with. Many of them are employed through our collaboration with companies,” Munkombwe shared.

She emphasized the institution’s focus on providing practical training and work placements, which have led to successful employment outcomes for many graduates.

Munkombwe also acknowledged IAM Zambia’s partnerships with various organizations, including Workhead, which provides equipment for students in the Fashion Design program.

“Workhead has been instrumental in providing our students with the tools needed to start their own businesses and create job opportunities,” she added.

Pearce Tayali, Mulungushi Ward 21 Councilor, read a speech on behalf of Hon. Christopher Shakafuswa, Member of Parliament for Mandevu Constituency.

Tayali congratulated the graduates, noting that their achievements were a reflection of their hard work and perseverance.

“This day marks the culmination of your dedication and determination. It is a reflection of your journey, one that you should be proud of,” Tayali read from Shakafuswa’s message.

Tayali also encouraged the graduates to view their graduation not as the end, but as the beginning of new opportunities.

“The world you are about to enter is full of challenges and opportunities. It is your resilience, curiosity, and willingness to learn that will guide you,” Tayali said.

He urged the graduates to apply the skills they had learned to contribute meaningfully to Zambia’s development.

“The skills you have gained can help you contribute to the country’s growth. Whether you choose to further your education, join the workforce, or start your own business, always strive for excellence,” Tayali said.

Additionally, Tayali emphasized the importance of youth empowerment initiatives and encouraged the graduates to form cooperatives, take advantage of the CDF, and apply for grants and loans available through the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“Local councils, including mine, are available to assist you in navigating these processes,” he assured.

Tayali also addressed IAM Zambia’s role in promoting entrepreneurship and called for the institution to apply for funding from the Technical Education Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) to expand its training programs.

“The government is committed to supporting youth-led initiatives and job creation through entrepreneurship,” he stated.

Speaking earlier, Elizabeth Mfuni, representing IAM Zambia’s Country Director, praised the graduates for their achievements and highlighted the institution’s ongoing commitment to empowering youth through vocational education.

“At IAM Zambia, we are proud of your hard work and dedication. We are confident that you will continue to excel in your careers or entrepreneurial ventures,” Mfuni said.

The ceremony was attended by family, friends, faculty, and other stakeholders who celebrated the accomplishments of the graduates.

Over 500 youth have now completed programs at IAM Zambia, reinforcing the institution’s mission to equip young people with the skills needed for meaningful employment and entrepreneurship.
